Joel Joseph S. Marciano Jr.
At present Joel Joseph Marciano Jr. is an associate professor and director of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in UP Diliman. He is a holder of the Professor Emeritus Norberto S. Vila Professorial Chair in Engineering, also in UP Diliman. Outside UP, he is currently the director of UNICADD Tech Inc., and chairman of the Board for Telecommunications and Computer Technologies, Inc.
In 2001, he earned his doctoral degree in the same field from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, he held postdoctoral and other academic appointments in different countries. He was an associate research scientist in the University of California in San Diego, ; a UP-Dado Banatao fellow and visiting scholar in Berkeley Wireless research Center a visiting professor in Tallwood Venture Capital in Palo Alto; and a JSPS short-term fellow in the Tokyo INstitute of Technology.
His career path has generally been focused on being a research, a teacher, and a consultant for several companies, most of these with his alma mater, UP Diliman. He also received research grants and published numerous works in and out of the country, such as in Japan, China, Austria, and the United States.
He has received much recognition for his work. In 2008, he was named one of the 50 Men and Women of Science by the DOST. He was named the Most Outstanding Electronics Engineer in the field of Education by the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP). Also that same year, he received the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teacher in UP Diliman. For the period of 2006-2007, he received the Most INnovative and Best Business Plan Award from the Philippine Emerging Startups Open 2006 (PESO 2006).
He is affiliated with the ASEAN Engineer Registry; the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of which he has become the Chair in 2007-2009; the Institute for Electronics, Information, and Communications Engineers; and the Institute for Electronics Engineers of the Philippines.
